Are there any good nondraw moose hunts available? Has anyone hunted Ontario? Do you need a guide? The Maine moose thread got me thinking but drawing a tag is a longshot. Any info appreciated Greg

Don't need a guide in Alaska, and can buy a moose tag over the counter. I think Ernie Holland is still outfitting on the Moose John River. Excellent hunt at a reasonable price.

Check Alberta, you can hunt them in fringe country and combo with deer.

Orion, I must be cheap, 6000 plus tags and transportation doesn't seem reasonable to me. I'm sure it's a great hunt hunt but I can't swing it at this time. Thanks for the thought though. Trapper do you know about what the costs are in Ontario? Thanks Greg

Greg: Prices must have gone up considerably. That's nearly double what I paid 6 years ago.

Greg my brother is an Outfitter in Northern Ontario, I believe his hunts are around the $2500-$3000 dollar mark but don't quote me on it. He has fly-in camps, cottages at his base camp and remote tent camp set ups.

Ontario has a lottery system but it is only for residents of Ontario, non residents must go through an outfitter.
Trapper
Oh...if you own property in Ontario and you are a non resident, you may then also enter the resident moose draw, but I believe you can only hunt on your property, which seems a little useless to me.

Check out Newfoundland. Tuckamore Lodge. I hope I'm allowed to mention an outfitter here.

We did our self-guided moose hunt in Alaska in 99' for about 2300.00 bucks apiece. The biggest cost is airfare. A little planning and research and one can still do an affordable do-it-yourselfer hunt. I think moose numbers may be down a bit from when we went.
Moose are not hard animals to hunt, but do require some logistics to deal with the meat. Any good elk hunter should be able to figure it easily.
By the way, on our hunt, 3 out of 4 of us bow hunters had chances at legal bulls. I took a nice 60 incher with my selfbow.
