ATTENTION NC BOWHUNTERS
« on: July 22, 2008, 07:35:00 AM »
There are a few prposals on the agenda concerning new laws, which you all should be aware of. The main one is to open hunting season for deer on the 2nd sat of sept till jan 1 . This is any weapon of choice. It will basically do away with the separate bow and muzzleoader seasons. NCBA has a ballot you can voice your opinion on these matters. Also they have a list of distric commisioners to email your thoughts. We need to let our voices be heard on this. Don

>> SURVEY:  Preliminary Proposals from wildlife commissioners for 2009
>> Deer Proposal:  This proposal provides for the deer season to open the
>> 2nd Saturday of September and run through January 1st.   On private lands
>> only, landowners, lessees, etc., will be allowed to hunt with the
>> weapon of their choice (Bow, ML or Rifle) during this entire season.
>> This proposed season will apply to the entire state.  The bow, muzzle
>> loader and modern gun seasons will continue to apply on selected game
>> lands only. The purpose for this proposal is to produce a huge
>> increase in deer harvest immediately.
>> NCBA Comments:  We see a very big problem with this proposal for deer
>> hunting and for ALL deer hunters.  It will have a devastating effect
>> on both bow and muzzle loader seasons.  It will adversely affect the
>> "quality" of deer harvested, and the quality of the deer hunting
>> experience itself for all deer hunters, not just the bowhunters and
>> muzzle-loader hunters.  Deer that survive the first couple weeks of
>> hunting will go nocturnal and be very difficult to pattern and hunt
>> for the remaining 3 months of deer season. "Rutting" activity would
>> be non-existent in daytime. This could adversely affect the total
>> harvest and actually reduce the annual deer harvest. Extending gun
>> deer seasons will not reslult in hunters choosing to shoot more deer.
>> This rule, if passed, will drastically reduce the demand for archery
>> and muzzle-loading weapons, supplies and accessories and will
>> adversely affect retail dealers of archery and muzzle-loader
>> equipment. It will be devastating for bowhunters and muzzle-loader
>> hunters alike, and for their respective sports. We urge our members
>> to consider all these and other possible ramifications of this
>> proposal and vote accordingly below.  We also encourage each and
>> every one of you to contact all of your wildlife commissioners and
>> let them know that the "Deer Proposal" is not good for the resource,
>> our deer.  Nor is it good for the quality of the sport of deer
>> hunting in any form. We should also note that we oppose any further
>> lengthening of any gun seasons that encroach upon our "bow only" seasons, should this issue arise.
>> NOTE: Mr. Hoyle's address is: David W. Hoyle, Jr.;  PO Box 708;
>> Dallas, NC 28034.  His email is: [email protected] .
>> Sunday Bowhunting Proposal:  This proposal provides for the
>> legalization of Bowhunting and Falconry hunting on Sundays.
>> NCBA Comments:  The commissioners said it was time for them to make
>> the tough decision on this issue and move to approve these activities.
>> Whether you agree with this proposal or not,  I commend the
>> commissioners for taking the lead in this issue and making a move to
>> resolve it. It has been on our legislative agenda for a couple years
>> now that we would "support whatever position the N.C. Wildlife
>> Resources Commission takes on legalization of Sunday hunting."  Even
>> so, we ask that you simply VOTE on this issue as you personally choose to do on this issue.
>> Turkey Proposal:  This proposal opens the turkey season one week
>> earlier statewide,  which is the first Saturday in April.  It will
>> also close one week earlier.  Youth day will be the last Saturday in March.
>> NCBA Comments:  There is some scientific justification for doing
>> this, and/or not doing it.  Again,  please VOTE your choice in this matter.
>> Dog/Trespassing Proposal:  This proposal deals with trespassing and
>> dog hunting for deer.  It provides that all dogs must be ID'd in some
>> fashion such as a collar,  tattoo, etc.  If Dogs are found on POSTED
>> property, the owner can be cited and fined for trespassing.
>> NCBA Comments:  A similar law has been enacted in Georgia with very
>> positive results.  VOTE your choice on this issue.
>> Other proposals are revivals of issues that we supported in past
>> years that are on our legislative agenda involving:  1- Hunting coyotes at
>> night with a light;   2- Retrieving dead/wounded animals with use of a
>> dog on a leash at night with a light.
>> BALLOT:  VOTE HERE..

my understanding is that these proposals will go to "public hearing" this winter - for comment - then to be voted on. Not good - because this is the legitimate track for new legislation. Everybody go ahead and contact all the commissioners with your opinions - then attend the hearings this winter. I have sent my take on these issues to all parties concerned - Thanks Don for the info - guys use that for contact info - good luck - we are going to need it.
