ATV's going into Canada
« on: February 17, 2011, 08:45:00 AM »
I'm going on a fall black bear hunt in Canada.  The outfitter starts bait sites for you in advance but I will be hanging my own stands and getting myself to and from the stands myself.  I was told that some of these baits could be as far away as 5 miles from camp so using an ATV is encouraged.  I recently bought a 1980 honda 3 wheeler and fixed it up.  The problem is I don't have a title (I'm not sure if they even have titles) and was wondering if anyone knew how I can get it registered to take into Canada.  I'm a total novice at this so any and all help would really be appreciated.  Any tips or comments on trips like this would also be appreciated.  Yhanks, TRW.

Tim, I can't help with any info on the atv. However i would tell you 5 miles in the roads and brush up there isn't really all that far, so start hiking.   :biglaugh:
Seriously though, how are you feeling?

It may be cheaper in the long run to rent a Machine once you get up here. No worries about crossing the border and you can rent a 4x4 machine. You will save a few dollars on gas not having to tow a trailer up.

One thing I remember from a past trip, is the machines must be clean. No mud, sludge, or debris on them. I've heard of guys having to turn around, find a carwash, and hose 'em clean. Seems there is some concern about soil borne pathogens, or dirt cooties coming into the country.

The cleanliness thing is over Hoof and Mouth disease, bovine spongiform encephlaopathy (sp? Mad Cow disease), anthrax, blue tongue, etc.

I would not advise bringing a vehicle into Canada that does not have its paperwork in order. If there was any problems (which I don't think there would be) you have no proof of ownership.

And when you return, the US customs might also have a problem with the vehicles rightful ownership.

I take a trailer full of ATV`s into Canada every spring. I always carry the paperwork for each machine, but I have never even been asked if they were mine or not.

I was turned away from the border in 2009 because the Canadian border patrol agent was able to dirty the fingertips of his glove with some dust under the rear fender of one machine.

I had to turn around, go through US customs, drive 7 miles to a car wash, then return. The Canadians claimed it was a Canadian Agriculture Department rule that no dirt can be brought in to their country. The machine was nearly showroom clean, they were just upset at having to totally tear down my crewcab truck and trailer because they did not believe that 5 hunters had no alcoholic beverages onboard.  :)
