Sunday hunting bill passes both houses of General Assembly

RICHMOND -- Both houses of the General Assembly have passed legislation to legalize Sunday hunting on private property in Virginia, virtually assuring that the state’s long-standing ban will be lifted.
 
The Senate passed its version of the legislation (SB 154) today by a vote of 29-10. The House of Delegates passed a separate, identical bill (HB 1237) last month.


Each house must pass the other’s bill before the legislation goes to Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s desk. McAuliffe has said he supports lifting the ban on Sunday hunting.

The bill would allow Sunday hunting on private property during designated seasons by hunters who have a landowner’s written permission. It would prohibit hunting within 200 yards of a place of worship.

Maybe this will inspire NC to reexamine their laws.

Update:

The governor signed it into law a couple of days ago.

To say I am overjoyed would be an understatement.

Unbelievably, we will face it again next year as opponents (who are hunters) will try to convince legislators next year to either repeal or include an option to allow counties to opt out.

We have it for this upcoming year, but appears, we will have to fight to keep it.

The "hunters" who are not supportive of the change have aligned themselves with HSUS and other anti-hunting groups.  Two men by the names of Kirby Birch and Virginia Delegate Lee Ware continue to fight us at every turn.  They are representatives of the tradition of hunting deer with hounds.  It is unphathomable to me that two men, who claim to be hunters, will do so much to keep their "good ole boy" clubs and tradition as the "untouchables" of the hunting world.

If you want to play with the liberals, when the houndsmen bring in HSUS, you should bring in the ACLU and fight Sunday bans as religious discrimination.    

In all seriousness, if someone is agnostic, atheist, Muslim, Jewish, Baha'i', Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, any tribal religion from many parts of the 3rd world or even good God fearing Christians, how exactly can the state pick a Sabbath day in which nobody can hunt? And if that's the case, why is golf and football OK on a Sunday?

But don't worry, once outdated blue laws are removed, they don't come back. Ironically however, the days of hunting with free ranging hounds are coming to an end. At least east of the Mississippi they are. Hounds for western cougar may be the last hold out in 20 years. The irony is, it will be HSUS that leads the way in garnering public support among non-hunters who ultimately will bring an end to hunting bear, deer, coons and coyote with the use of dogs. I predict the "sport" has less than 15 years left in most states. In many cases, fellow landowning hunters are sick of hound hunting due to endless trespassing and general violations of the rights involved with private land ownership. When the day comes, and it's approaching faster than the hound hunters know, the houndsmen will regret working with HSUS.
