Question about Vario Clipper
« on: January 16, 2008, 10:10:00 PM »
I'm getting ready to buy a new 5" feather chopper, and I've seen a lot of people recommend the Vario Clipper over the Little Chopper that 3Rivers sells, but there is no real explanation besides "it's better" from most people.

Could someone shed light on this subject please?  What makes the Vario Clipper that much better to justify spending 2 to 3 times more than the Little Chopper?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to be cheap.  I own a 4" Shield cut Little Chopper, and have never really had a problem with it, so I want to know why the Vario is considered better by so many people before I order my next chopper.  If it truly is better in some justifiable way, I don't mind spending the money on it.  If not.. then I can buy 2 or 3 Little Choppers and have some "variety" available when I want it.    ;)

All the best,
Glenn

With the vario clipper you only need to buy one base and you can cut a variety of shapes as the blades are interchangeable...it is designed to cut feathers without your fingers getting in the way as well. There is a base plate with a strip that holds the quill of the feather and you can cut feathers by hand...you don't need to whack it with a hammer!! Once you see the Vario, you will see why they cost more than the Little Chopper...the construction is so much better.
Both myself and Herb Haines sell the Vario Clipper and have a variety of shapes available.

Thanks you for the comments.  It was actually your online store that I was looking at buying from.  They looked similar to the Little Chopper, and that was my reason for asking - but if you don't need to whack it with a hammer like you do on a Little Chopper, that makes it a "want" immediately.   :D    I noticed your prices are in Canadian.  Is there a conversion to US on your site?  Sorry for asking.  I've never ordered from out of the US before.  Thanks again for the response.
All the best,
Glenn

Reasons to buy the Vario over the LC:

No hammer needed

Vario has a quill holder that makes the process even faster/easier/more consistent

You get a "factory cut" every time with the Vario

Much more durable construction with the Vario

I used LC's for years, owned several different ones and cut several thousand feathers with them.  Not knocking them at all, the Vario is just a better tool, and well worth the price difference IMO.

One down side with the Vario is Gateway feathers don't work too well due to the thicker quill base--won't fit in the holder very well.

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions.  I'm sold on buying a Vario.  I'll order one today or tomorrow.

Chad,
I shouldn't have problems, as I use TrueFlight feathers about 99% of the time, but thank you for that tip.

Glenn

I bought my Vario from Herb.  I have been able to use GW feathers, no problem.  Maybe they changed their specs since I last bought
