Initial edge?

I've got my blades cut out and starting on the finish, but I'm having a hard time getting the initial edge.
I was thinking about using a file with my Smith's sharpener. Has anyone ever tried this?
What are you guys doing to get the edge on yours?

I use a Wilton Square Wheel grinder (and practice, practice, practice).
You can use any belt sander, grinder, files, course stones, whatever you can get your hands on.
