Quality of Helle knife blades?
« on: March 15, 2008, 04:51:00 PM »
Thinking about building a knife. How good are these blades and do they hold an edge like nobody's business. That is the kind of steel I am interested in. All comments welcome. Thanks.

The steel in Helle's blades is first rate. Great edge retention & simple to maintain.

I have three of their knives and have determined that for the price, they are hard to beat.

I've got 3 Randles, but the Helle is what I reach for to do the work....and they are easy to sharpen and do hold an edge extremely well.

I used my Helle Polar blade to skin not one, but two moose in Ontario. It held its edge exceptionally well.

I really like the couple I have.  One has done 2 elk and still sharp.  Worth the money for sure.

Sounds like just what I'm looking for. I get tired of sharpening all the time. Thanks for the replies.

Just bought one about a month ago.  The handle seems pretty light compared to other knives.  Changes the blance of the knife.  Haven't used it yet.  How about sharpening them.  With the center material different, looks like it would be real important to keep the proper angle when sharpening.  I usually just use a couple different stones, the a rezor storp.  Any thoughts.

Gene,

Sharpening the Helle Knives is easy.  First of all they seldom need it.  When they do, maintain the flat already on the knife to reform the edge.  Don't over work it, a few strokes usually brings it right back to shaving sharp.  We have customers that have done multiple elk and moose without touching the blade with a stone.
