My new Helle knife build
« on: April 04, 2008, 06:56:00 PM »
After I saw that my clamp had slipped on my latest BBO bow I had to change course a little. Man that sucked!
Oh well.. here's the blade blank I bought at OJAM. The handle is coming along well I think.
I was going to try to use the copper out of a fuse to dress the handle up a little but it is too small.

It's bocote in the middle then padauk, then bubinga, and cocobolo on the ends. This is all scrap wood from my bows.

Looking good! I've never tried shaping the handle first. I always glue the blade in the handle block when it is still a rectangle piece like in the third picture. That way, in case I get the blade a little off center,     Mike

Good looking handle.  I've been thinking about trying to assemble a Helle knife so I'll be following along.

Bought a brass hilt at the gun show yesterday. Now all I have to do is get the handle and it to match up and epoxy everything together.

Update: Got the brass hilt reduced and rough shaped to handle. I can see advantage to shaping the handle/hilt AFTER mounting the blade. Now all my finsh sanding and polishing of the forward portion of the handle will get scuffed as I mate the edge of the hilt to the surface of the wood. Oh well, learned another lesson.

I'll post pics when I get closer to being done.

Looking good. Just curious, are you a railroader? That copper looks like the ends to a locomotive start fuse. I am a loco mechanic, reason I ask. I have saved some for the same purpose.
