New pics of Camp Knife
« on: April 21, 2008, 09:01:00 PM »
A couple of months ago I did a forging and cutting demo in Little Rock and showed pics of that and my knife. I decided to get some better photos of the knife. It's a 10 inch blade of truck spring differentially heat treated. The handle is self laminated Blackwood and Cocobola.

Lin, That knife is a beauty.  The Blackwood really shows off the Cocobola.

Lin, whats the blade shape on that dude?  Is it considered a drop point or spear?  It looks great!

Steve, I would say it's a drop point. The clip is not sharp except the first inch or so. Dropping the point allows you to carry the cutting edge on out a little more before it has to turn up.
The spine is rounded over to enable you to press the back of the blade with the other hand, if you need to.

Lin can you elaborate on this "The handle is self laminated Blackwood and Cocobola". Is that something you personally laminated together? Cutting fine strips or drum sanding? Glue?
Awesome knife by the way!

LC,
Yes, I had some left over cut offs that alone were too thin. So I arranged the layers from the center out to get the same look on both sides. The center layer is cocobola and it is tapered exacly like the tang. Just notched it for the tang to fit.
I flattened the pieces on the flat platten before super glueing then up. I left them a little oversized and ground to shape. If you do this type of laminations, I recommend using Loctite brand super glue and complete coverage between layers. This was my second attempt on that handle.
This handle has 5 layers in it.

very nice. I have never noticed a lanyerd done like that. It makes a lot of sence on a big heavy bladed knife. Very cool!
