tempering

My father passed away and left me some unfinished blade blanks he probably used tool steel but I am not sure and was wondering how to get them tempered w/o knowing what kind of steel they are?

If you guess they are all the same steel, you may need to sacrifice one or two of them to the tempering Gods to get in the ball park.
First thing I would look for is rust! If they are nice and clean and still rust free, then they are probably stainless.

Sorry for your loss.  
Someone else who knows more about this than I  will chime in soon, I am sure.
Are you gonna finish them yourself?  There is plenty of help here and you'll end up with a knife that you will be proud of.
Like KBA said, try to determine if it is stainless or not first.

I would need to know if they are Saw blades steel, stainless, etc. You might can determine this by their appearance. Do they look "storebought"? Hollowground? Holes drilled? Brand name stamped? I'm sure we all would be glad to help.

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad. These might be special blades, so let us know what we can do.

These ARE special blades,My father was a tool and dye machinist for 40+ years and He was going to make them for a knife club he belonged to, I have 21 of them. He once told me that they needed to be heated until they were red and dropped in oil, but I am not going to try that myself. I would be willing to part with a few to get them ready to finish. I cannot figure out how to post pics but I can e-mail(I think) they are hollow ground(?) appear shiny where there is not some kind of blue dye and white paint on a couple. I have plenty of scales and handle material maybe we could collaborate on finishing some? or maybe we could trade a couple of blades for tempering? Or a competition for the fun of it? I have many other blades in various stages of completion that are superior to these that mean more to me so I would not miss a few. However I do want to finish some myself.

STIKNSTRINGBOW,  If he said it was to be quenched in oil, I would assume it is high carbon steel.  I'd be glad to quench one and try to find the proper temper on it for you...Doc
