Last Time I Promise!
« on: September 13, 2008, 02:36:00 PM »
I've been playing around with this flared finger guard for the past week and finally come up with the guard that I was looking for.  I had to modify an old cutting maul by grinding and rounding the chisel end off.  This gave me the right size and enough heft to pound the flare in with more controlled blows.  Thought ya'll might like to see the difference between my flared guard from my spreading cross peen hammer and the modified cutting maul.

Also to get the guard protecting the finger you need to hammer it forward not flat on the anvil.  Both are flared nicely but the smaller one wraps around you finger quite well...tippit

Jeff,
You have it now. I've been watching you get the guard more forward and now you have it. The radius is perfect and I like the slight formation of the finger notch. Joe Keeslar does'nt do the notch much from what I've seen.
I know that you are not neccesarily imitating Joe Keeslar's work exactly, but he does one more little touch that I think you may want to experiment with. He gives the sides of the guard a very slight radius and he does it with the hammer. In other words, while forming the basic radius that shows in the profile, he tilts his hammer to the right and then to the left forging the curl of material forward and upward. The radius goes two ways.
I dont mean to get off subject. I like this style of knife. By the way, you have pretty hands in the other thread.   :goldtooth:   Lin

Sounds (and looks) like your level of satisfaction just went up.  Nice knife and way to chase it until you are happy.
