STRINGS!!!!!!!
« on: January 24, 2008, 07:45:00 PM »
Ok fellows, here we go.
1st)I shoot a Morrison Shawnee Recurve and I'm curious about the different type of strings to use. I have read the small captions below the strings in TBM but would appreciate a more detailed version on the differences.

2nd) What type of string would you recommend adn why(strands, material, etc.) please include serving size so I can stop sanding my Gold Tip nocks down!

3rd) Where can I buy the string you recommend

I'm trying to learn more about this subject so please explain your posts.

Thanks in advance...Mike

I like 10-12 strand D-97. with like a .024 serving, it fits my nocks howe I like them and just seems quieter than any other material to me. Ya can also get away with 8 strands as well. Golden Hawk or LBR make great strrings as well as bearbowman. I always have them pad the loops as well. Shawn

I like 14 strands of D-97 and .024 Halo serving.  Works well with my 5/16 Bohning classic nocks.  Don't need that many strands for strength, but I just like a string that looks a little more substantial.  I agree with Shawn that D-97 seems to be among the quieter of the fast flite type materials, at least it is for me.  Both materials are available from most trad supply houses, or order directly from the manufacturer, BCY.  They have a web site.

Get it from LBR at recurves.com

He used to/still does ( I don't know) make the strings for the Morrison you're holding!

And his products are actually top rate...as the first thing I usually do w/ a new bow is dump the string...but not if it's one of his!

First off, I appreciate the good word!

There's not a huge difference (material-wise) in the different FF materials.  As far as I know, they all use Dyneema for the main material, with some adding a smaller amount of another material (usually Vectran).  Dynaflight '97 is 100% Dyneema, 8125 is 92% Dyneema, 450+ is 70/30 Dyneema/Vetran, 452X is 67/33 Dyneema/Vectran, etc. etc. etc.  Vectran is added to further reduce stretch/creep, but Dyneema has very little to begin with.

Which one is quieter/works better just depends--how the string is made, the number of strands, what the bow "likes", your personal perception, etc.

A well made string from the worst material may perform better than a poorly made string from the best material.  Some strings on some bows may be quieter with a certain number of strands, and it's not always quieter with more strands.  Some bows will, for whatever reason, be quieter, even faster, with one material vs. the other--I have no idea why it works that way, but it does.  Finally, a string that is very quiet to me may be loud to you, depending on your hearing--some folks pick up more on higher pitches, some on lower.

The fastest string is going to be the lightest--fewer strands or smaller diameter material, shorter serving, smaller sized serving--but may not be the quietest, or most stable for you.  One trick passed on to me from Rod Jenkins is use a smaller serving and build your nock point up with dental floss rather than add the extra weight of a large serving, or double-serving, or adding strands under the serving.  I haven't tried that yet, but it works for him.

Personally, I like 12-14 strands of Dynaflight '97, because that seems to work best for me.  8125 runs a close second, same strand count.  The only way to know for sure what is going to work best for you on your bow is try different strings.  Since Bob Morrison sends out 14 strand 8125 strings on his bows, my guess is that's what he's had the best results with.  I don't make strings for Bob anymore--A&H has been keeping me pretty dang busy for the last good while--but as far as I know he still prefers 8125.  A&H sends out Dynaflight '97 (12 strands, 18 in the loops).  Padding the loops out to 16-18 strands (with dacron) seems to help quieten the string without hurting performance.

You'll probably have to keep filing the nocks on the GT's.  Reason being is those nocks were designed for compound shooters using a release aid--a hard snap so they won't fall off the string.  Use a serving size that fits the throat is going to give you a harder snap that I like;  using a size that gives you a light snap is going to be pretty loose in the throat.

If you have specific questions about BCY products, Ray Brown at BCY has always been great to respond to my e-mails;  or I'll help if I can.

What type of bowstring and fiber is something folks either obsess over or just don't think much about.  My suggestion is, if yer bow can handle modern string fiber, then don't bother with Dacron and stick with some form of Dyneema.  Next up would be yer string spex in terms of strand count, precise length, and the right center serving thread to best fit (loosely!) yer brand and size of arra nock.  And it all comes together with a good stringmaker - hands down, I highly recommend Chad (LBR).

BCY's DF'97 has always been a mainstay for trad bowstrings - I use BCY D'02 exclusively because it has far less inherent impregnated wax and I don't want or need a lotta wax for my spun endless strings.  Other than the wax content, DF'97 and D'02 are the same 100% Dyneema HMPE bowstring fiber.

Oh yeah--throw those GT nocks away!!  Go get you some EASTON 3D SUPER nocks; they have a larger throat diameter for carbons on competition recurve strings.  You must ensure that you are getting the 3D SUPER's or you will get standard Easton nocks and get the same problems with fit.

tollgatearchery.com is a good string source as well.

Thanks for the tip on the Easton 3D Super Nocks.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I'll call Chad or George to fine tune my search. You all gave me some useful info.

I just got an 8125 string from Chad at Recurves.com and it is a fine, well made string. I have two more on order for other bows. It sure kicked-up the speed on my Hybrid LB. It seems a little louder than B500 dacron, but I believe I can quiet her down with a little tweeking of brace height etc. Can't go wrong with strings from Chad.
