"Lines" Question
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:13:00 AM »
I need some help here folks.

Im in the middle of my next knife and have a question related to the grind lines on the blade.  This is the template that im loosely copying (handle is going to be longer...feels funny in the hand when its that short)

Anyway, i have a flat grind from the cutting edge to the end of the grind that i marked on my blade.  The ricasso obviously becomes more evident as you remove metal, but the lines near the spine are where im having problems.  There is a definite ridge along the line i had marked out, but it just doesnt seem like it is as defined as most i have seen.

I didnt know if this was something that would just "pop" when i finished and polished the blade, or if I needed more of a hollow grind to really define the lines.  Inquiring minds want to know.

Any and all advice from everyone on here are appreciated.  Thanks for the help guys

Hey from the lakes mast.

You've already answered you own question man.  Flat grinds aren't typically gonna be as defined as hollow grinds.  Of course, the thicker the blade is the more pronounced the grind will be no matter which grind you do.

One thing you can do to make the grind line POP more is to do your finish sanding and polishing on the grind first and then the flat of the spine.  Gives if more definition.

The other thing is when your doing finish sanding, be sure to use really flat sanding blocks and make sure the paper is good and tight.  If the paper is loose or the block isn't flat they will roll over the edge and soften it.

Hope that's what you're looking for.  Look forward to seeing the knife done.
chiger,

Great question! I've wondered the same thing and I had problems getting the grind line to show up and eventually gave up.
