Annealing without bending
« on: April 13, 2009, 08:36:00 PM »
It seems that every time I go to heat treat a blade I end up putting a bend in it. Has anyone had the same problem or have a solution? Thanks,
Matt

How are you heating your blades?  If you're just using a torch and direct heat on the blade you will bend 'em unless you're very careful.

Sometimes I use a torch in a vise, other times I let it sit on a bed of coals in a fire. I know it's not the ideal situation, but I thought I might be able to make it work

I assume you are talking about warping. Right? If you are heating it unevenly, letting it start it's cooling unevenly, or if the grind is uneven from side to side, you can get warping.

Grind even and thermocycle

Heat in oven or forge or control your torch better. This should be done in a calm area with no air movement. Turn all fans off, close doors and windows if it's windy.

Immediatly put the blade in lime or some insulating medium. Be careful not to get rough with it while placing in the lime.

Wait a few hours. This should work. Lin
