"Spur some interest"?  Pun intended I guess, cause I've been spurred by cock pheasants in my careless youth.

Can we have a team entry in the turkey calling contest?  My buddy Bill (PABones) and I perfected a routine we called "the Rodney shuffle" that was deadly on those Cincinnati urban gobblers.......

Jeff/Larry, what heads should the boys and I put on our arrows for the pheasant hunt?

Terry,

I am telling the guys in my group to bring something other than broadheads. We want to make sure that if the dog does try to retrieve the birds it won't get hurt.

I am going to try some pheasant buster heads featured in a recent TBM story by Bruce Garahan, plus some Ace hex heads.

You want/need to pick a head that gives you both penetration and shock, but penetration is more important. They will continue to fly after they are hit so you want your arrow to stay in them. They don't fall out of the sky like they do with a shotgun.

Also, anything in the air will get pushed by whatever hits it. It isn't like shooting at somethind on the ground. This is why a head that will penetrate is so important. I plan to use something like a judo that will penetrate and have some shock effect to it. That way I break stuff and keep my arrow in the bird as it flies off a little way.

The pheasant buster head that Jeff is talking about has some wide blades on it help hit the bird as it flies. It is effective too. It's all personal preference.  Part of the fun is trying new stuff out.

Terry,

Did you want to join one of our groups? I have room for some more folks on Thursday afternoon.

I won't be able to join in on the fun...might have a little work to do at the Radisson Green Tree.  My 17 year old son Chase might be interested though.

Kevin,

Let me know if Chase wants to take part in it. I have two or three spots left to fill in a second group of five.

Thanks Larry.  He would need a ride from the hotel and back...we would of course throw in some gas money.  He said he's interested.

Hey Larry, how many arrows should Chase bring?  How many are the rest of you guys bringing?  And do they have to be flu flus, and what heads?  We need to take stock of what we have in the bucket...

Kevin/Chase, and everyone else,

I will be sending out an email to everyone with the details in a day or two, once I get some final details settled. Please PM me with your email addresses so I can do it in one message instead of a mix of emails and PMs.

I would suggest bringing about a half dozen flu flu arrows with blunts, no broadheads please. Also, bring some orange with you if you have it.

We will be in groups of 5 or 6 with each group split into two teams that will alternate taking shots at each bird as the dog finds it.

I have two groups already filled for Thursday afternoon, one with five and one with six. That should be all that they can handle on Thursday afternoon.

If there are others who want to do this they can set up their own groups either Thursday morning or Friday or Saturday at either Mt. Hope or the other reserve mentioned above.
