A piece of Bear leg bone and a Tippit blade
« on: August 06, 2009, 01:41:00 PM »
Okay, your all saying "how did he get a Tippit blade". The Tippit blade was donated by Jeff for the largest bear taken at the Bear Quest II last year. The bear leg bone was, well, from the leg of the bear that was the biggest. My question is "what do I do now?". I want to use the leg bone to make scales for the blade and don't have the foggiest idea where to start. How do I prep the bone, etc. Any and all help will be extremely appreciated. I don't want to screw up either one.  Thanks

Can you take a picture of the blade and bone and post it? That might help with giving us some idea of what you have to work with.

Don't have a camera at this time, but I'll see what I can do over the weekend.

If the bone is thick enough I would suggest cutting it down the middle to make the scales. I would make sure it was dry to hopefully avoid much warping. I was just wondering if there would be a void left where the marrow was in the bone.

Matt, I think that tippit knife for the biggest bear is probably not suitable to slab Stuby's calloused leg bone.  It makes more sense to make a blade especially for that bone.

So I'll make you a deal   :)

1)  You donate the knife for the biggest bear back to next years ST Judes Auction.

2) Send me Stubby's bone and I'll make you a specific knife for that bone. Not necessarily like this but probably using that bone whole.  It is a straight bone so some type of straight blade would look nice...tippit

My knife from Stubby's Ulna.  Matt has the larger Radius with the callous end.
