01 Moose Antler
« on: December 16, 2009, 09:28:00 PM »
Havnt posted in a while but figured I throw a couple of pics up of a knife I did for a buddy.  He helped to no end in the building of our strawbale home........Thanx Jeff.

Knife is 1/4" 01 with moose antler scales.  I used 1/4" brass rod for pins/rivets.  I double tempered it at 425 deg after normalizing 3 times and quenching at jus above non megnetic.  It pops hair litterally with just the weight of the knife!

thanx for lookin

Blade not 1/4" 01. 3/16" 01.  It is a heavy knife but thats what he wanted.

I do have pics......The quickest way to view them is to google "loggingdays"  and page down until you read something to the effect of "building a house is hard work"  I am not sure if there are straw pics there but the stackwall portion of the house is there for sure.

We ran out of time to continue the stackwall and reverted to straw for the south and east sides......our prarie winter was bearing down on us.

A strawbale home is one built of small square bales.  they can be load bearing ie (hold up the roof) or they can be used as infill in a post and beam frame.  We did the post and beam frame thing.

the exterior is usually cement stucco and the interior also has a plaster finish of some sort .....we used white cement inside.

they are very warm, and very strong, and surprisingly very fire resistent (after stucco of course)  but even before stucco bales unless kicked apart dont burn very well.  You farm guys will know what I mean.
