question about stainless(not for a blade)

i know how to aneal brass, copper and metals like that, but how would you aneal stainless to make it easier to work down for guards and such.

I have a friend who uses stainless for guards.He just purchases stock from a knife supply.

Do you know what type of stainless it is ?with alot of steels it would be to heat to non-magnetic and bury it in ash(or something)to prevent it from cooling too quickly.The problem is there are alot af specialty steels out there,some are trickier than others.

I would think that typically if he purchased it from a knife supplier it would be annealed already for ease of working...
