off topic... forging broadheads
« on: February 12, 2010, 09:20:00 AM »
So has anybody here forged broadheads?  I don't mean primitive trade points but with glue on ferrules, etc?  I was thinking you could approach it like a tomahawk and forge weld two pieces over some kind of mandrel to make the ferrule? I'd like to make something similar to the single edge Grizzly's....

I will search the forum too... but if any of you have done it, I love some tips.

I'm no maker but why not turn down a field point to make the ferrule? Then silver solder the blade on?

I could I guess.  But I'm looking more at sort of the aesthetic appeal of something hand-forged and unique.

You can forge them with one piece.  Flare the bottom out, wrap it around a mandrel... no need to even forge weld the socket if you don't want to - the originals weren't.

If you shoot carbon or aluminum shafts, you can forge your own insert with the broadhead.  These were made to go into Beman ICS Hunter shafts.  Forged from 5160 bar stock throw away pieces plus you can make any weight you desire.  They worked well enough to drop a 300# bear...tippit

Those are real nice... and look a lot easier to make. I will be shooting bamboo cane arrows and a tang would work I think.

Thanks!
