single bevel blades

Just picked up a CRKT Stiff K.I.S.S. at the flea market cheap, NIB. Single bevel, tanto point like a Grizzly broadhead. I have never run into a single bevel knife blade before. What are the pros and cons of this design? Any special tricks to sharpen? Thanks.

I cant say much about this design, but I can tell you how to keep it sharp, just keep the flat side flat and sharpen the other side. This sounds like I'm gettin cute, but I dont mean to be. Youd be surprised at how many would pick up and immediately sharpen both sides.

The cross over application of this grind would be scissors, Draw knives, Broad axes, etc. Lin

I've seen some old time skinners ground to a single bevel to limit hide damage.

I have heard that some of the patch knives were single ground to get a flush cut on the patch. Not sure, but it sounds good. I can see where some might find good application for this grind. Lin

The standard sailor's knife is a single bevel. They work great for cutting line all the time.

As mentioned they are great for cutting thru anything stiff, leathers, rope, etc...  There are entire series of knives based on that knife edge and they work great.

I just got back from Great Smokey Mountain Blade Symposium...I got to see & and hold a Bill Moran single bevel blade.  I'll post pictures when I get home from Aiken...tippit

Several knifemakers from southern Missouri and surrounding areas get together once a month to talk knives and experiment. A friend from the group told me one month a fellow showed up with a single bevel knife. They were doing the hanging rope cut with various knives. The single bevel beat all the others in that test. He said the single bevel did the cut much much easier.
