knife reclamation
« on: March 19, 2010, 01:09:00 AM »
i normally only stop by here to read and check all of the work you guys post(great by the way) but i have a question to pose. i have an old marine knife, pre ka-bar stamped PAL on the blade. it was given to me by my grandpa, and its one of my favorite knives. the handle is leather sections, and theyve shrank over time. ive put spacers in between and reconditioned the leather but it doesnt fill the gaps. My question is this; the knife has a peened end on the tang through a steel end, can i simply put it in a blade vise and peen the tang more? or should i file/grind off the old peen and make a fresh one since the old peen may already be pushed to its limit. any help would be appreciated, i love this knife and even though me fixing it may make it not original its a workhorse and thats exactly how i value it.
Richard
