Sheath making?
« on: March 29, 2010, 10:05:00 PM »
Are there any good websites about how to make a sheath.  I know nada.  I would like to make a few neck knife sheaths.  I am thinking something simple but not a kit from tandy or whatever.  What do you use for stitching?

I use artificial sinew for my handstitched items.
When the last deer disappears into the morning mist,
When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Scott,

I use the same B-50 I make bow strings out of. Prewaxed just like the artificial sinew. I always have it around and in several colors.

For "How-to" or patterns, a simple google search will yield lots of help, including video.

To get started, use a little Elmer's glue to put everything together. This helps me keep things lined up and the holes even. Then use a fork (yes, a fork from the kitchen) to mark where the holes go. Always put one tine on the last mark you made to keep the spacing even. Poke holes with whatever is handy and only slightly larger than the needle. Then stich it up.

Leather supplys have lots of tools and gadgets and most of them are handy. Do up a few and figure out what store bought items will work for you.

I found the perfect combo for me, after trying artificial sinew, B50, beading thread, etc....

Tandy waxed nylon sewing awl thread
Tandy part 1205-02

Harness needles
Tandy part 1192-13

Thanks for the info.  I have artificial sinew and B-50.  There is even a real walk-in Tandy store left here I think.  The fork makes great sense.  How do you make sheaths stiff? Do you start with thick stiff leather or do you treat it after making it to stiffen it?

Just looked through the tutorial kinda quickly.  That will help a bunch.  The dye is something I would not have thought of that light heavy leather seems like the right stuff but I would have thought you had to start with a darker color if that is what you wanted.
