What's your favorite leather glue?
« on: May 17, 2010, 12:25:00 PM »
I've been using Fiebings Leathercraft Cement and it seemed to work great at first but now it doesn't hold at all on some pieces. All the pieces came from the same side of leather.I don't know if the glue is weaker at the bottom of the container or if it just won't hold on some different grain density in the leather.

I've always used the Barge cement in a yellow tube or blue tube.

Weldwood contact cement from nearly any hardware store.  apply to both pieces, let sit 10' and press together.

The only time I've ever ran into problems gluing leather with any of the cements is when it was a heavily oiled leather, and I think that was mostly b/c I didn't give it extra time to dry.

Another user of Barge Cement. Used in most leather shops and shoe repair. Strong, and dries pretty fast.

Barge cement gets my vote. I buy it by the gallon and keep a gallon of thinner also. It's pretty important to keep it at the proper thickness and also learn what tacky level to press it together.
The shoe shops use two coats for the best bond.

Here in the saddleshop I use one coat on some parts , two on parts I never want to move.
The new formula is not as good as the old but is still better than all others for leather. Where it really shines is for wet leather. It's the king for wet formed sheaths, or saddles for that matter.
When you press it together, a light tapping with a snob hammer sets it.

I like barge in yellow tube.  Blue tube is too thin and messy for me.
