4 Camp Hawks Fresh From The Forge
« on: June 08, 2010, 10:52:00 PM »
I have been on a tomahawk making kick lately.  These are four of my latest creations  They are all mid to heavy weight camp hawks.  They have Ash or Hickory Handles and were designed for heavy field use and are equally at home chopping wood, pounding in stakes, or cutting brush for a ground blind.

Hot diggety pig! That last bearded hammer-poll is a beauty!

I mean they're all good, but number 4's a doozy!

What steel d'you use & what's the finished hardness of these puppies?

Rob,

I use a variety of steels.  Everything from standard simple high carbon bar stock to 0-1, or W-2 round stock.  I use a lot of recycled steels.  In particular forged hatchet and axe heads, high carbon crowbars, breaker bars, etc.....

I harden the blade and hammer on each hawk to  58 rockwell and temper them back to 50 to 51 rockwell.  I have found that hawk blades need to be a bit softer than a knife to avoid cracks along the cutting edge.

Thanks guys.  None of these are carry hawks.  They all weigh a ton and are perfect for camp use.  I will post some mid weight hawks i finished up later this evening.
