Hollow grinding jig?
« on: August 30, 2010, 11:33:00 PM »
I tried making a clean hollow grind on a knife I made last week and had a terrible time. Do you make a jig for that or is it just experience?
If there is a jig, could you post a pic of yours?
Thanks

I have an 8" contact wheel on my KMG and I just winged my first hollow grind a coupe of weeks ago. I just laid it on the wheel until I had a groove to follow.. then it was just a matter of rocking it back and forth to even everything out.  What are you grinding with?   If I start doing more hollow grinding, I will have to upgrade to a 10" wheel to get more even grinds from edge to spine....

Hey Scott, thanks for the reply.
I have the Sears 2x42 grinder. That was all I could afford to get. It has a smaller wheel. I kinda thought that you guys might be doing it by hand. I have tried that but I get many different bevels and it isn't great looking like the knives I see here.

The first thing I did with my KMG (after learning on my Sears 2x42!!) was do a hollow grind just because I could. It's pretty easy when you have the right stuff. A lot easier than flat grinding actually.

I would go to Blade forums and search there for folks doing it without a big wheel. A lot more hollow grinders there....

I just made my own straight razor for the hell of it and I was looking up grinding methods and came across this:
