How Many Carry and Use Trade Knives....French or English??
« on: October 01, 2010, 06:23:00 PM »
Hey all,

I have been looking at lots of knife pics lately and I find myself really liking the looks of the "old" style Trade Knives.  Now I am no knife expert but the French and English Trade knives seem to be the most appealing to my eye.  I also like the knives that are called "Patch" knives too.

Some of these style knives can be bought inexpensively and they look like they would work just fine for field dressing or camp chores.

So I thought I would ask and see how many of you have these types of knives on your belts.  What do you think of them?  Where did you get your knives from?

Lastly, if you have pics of your knife (or knives) how about posting them?  I'd like to see what all is out there riding on the belts of fellow TRAD archers.

Thanks for your time.

Have you seen the one on Paleoplanet by Wick Elerbe? It's a beauty and I want to make something like it.

I carry one every day around my neck.I made a sheath for it to suit me.I use it to cut dang near everything.Works really well on small game, and fish.I've even used it to gut deer an skin them out.I don't have pictures to show, but i had Daniel Winkler make it for me many many moons ago.Its 7 inches long and made from D2 steel.Cocobolo scales, seems like it will hold an edge for a long time.

I find this guys work amazing.
I bought one of his turned handle knives at a gun show a few years ago and love it. A very practical do all 18th century design with a sheath that has an outside loop for carry behind the belt. Plain and elegant. Don't have the wherewithal to post a photo right now–sorry!

I have made only a handful of knives so far, but they have all been French trade inspired. I like the lines of the style and find they balance and fit in the hand nicely. Tools that feel good are always more used. Go with what makes you happy and what you admire.

I carry two french style trade knives, one a switser is a 8" belt knife, the other is a Mike Beathe 5" blade carried in a neck sheath. The Beathe is my all round go to knife, holds and edge and is comfortable to use. These are my favorite for hunting trips.
Bowhunting is a passion, not an obsession. Its just hard for my wife to tell the difference sometimes.
