question about ceramic blanket

So I'm going to make a small forge.  I have an old 5gal air tank that I plan to use and line with ceramic blanket.
My question is, is it necessary to coat the blanket with something like plistix or is it ok without it?

You need to coat it. It will last longer and it will keep the particles from getting in your lungs. I use Satanite. Lin

I don't mean to but in, but Lin can you tell me how much it will take to do a forge that is 12" wide x 22" tall, I have never done mine, I'm taking about the satanite. I've had to replace the bottom once in 1 year of use. I'm thinking it would take about 20 lb

That's about right Dana for a forge that size. You can arrange a few fire brick in the bottom and coat float the Satanite over them to make a thicker floor in it too. If you have the room. Lin

Lin is right about using the fire brick as your base in the forge.  Mine is going on three years of use with the same bricks and occasional touch ups with satanite.

Thanks Lowell, I have the fiber in the bottom of my forge, the forge is made of 1/4" steel and weight about 300 lb. It should not burn out forcalong time

If you use borax flux for pattern welding, the borax will eat the blanket like cotton candy if it's not covered with something like satanite or bubble alumina or fire brick.

My forge is a 12 inch steel tube with 3 inches of insulation and satantite.  I have two bricks in the very bottom of the forge.  They stand up to flux and heavy steel pieces really well.
