what is the best style for beginners... i will be working with alot of RR spikes initially, so i was thinking some type of bolt tongs...

Sounds right to me.

Do you mean you will be holding RR spikes or using them for the materials?

OK i will be holding the RR spikes with the tongs, could you make tongs out of RR spikes?

I dont see why not if they are not too big. I use RR spikes a lot for a variety of things. It is not high carbon but where I dont need HC I like the material.
