need info on making 1st knife
« on: January 13, 2011, 05:59:00 PM »
Hello everyone,,  I asked the bowyer today who is making my longbow if I could have a couple small pieces of the riser to make a knife handle and he said sure.

so I'm wondering I just want 1 knife and if its easy enough I will try it myself OR is there any custom knife makers out there who could take my wood and make me a decent knife but not somethign thats going to cost as much as my bow,, I jsut want a good carbon steel blade, my handle and a double guard like a boot knife,, the blade I know the size but is there a dealer out there that has a good selection of blades to pick from?

im new to knife building but i love it and you will to if you make one.  if you have anybody that is local that builds knife try to learn from them if not there are tons of guys on here that know more than enough to help ya get your knife made.  the style of knife you are wanting sounts a little tough to me well the guard does anyways.  i have only made full tang knifes which is a knife with a piece of wood on either side for a handle and some make bolsters but i dont.  there are ways to acheive a guard without having to make one. you can make it part of the blade like i did my first knife and then make your handle to fit around it. or simple shape the wood handle to help prevent your hand sliping up on the blade.  i dont want to discourage you but there is a little more to making a good quality ,high carbon knife than most think. INCLUDING ME!!!! lol.  you could make your blade out of an old file. or maybe another high carbon steel you have access to.  there is a man on here named LIN  that is awesome, and puts up some really good post's.  the most recent is the process of heat treating certian types of steel.  that may give you some info you desire.  i wish i could be more help, but i myself am only a beginer.  good luck to you and if you make a knife all the guys here love to see everybody else's work (pics)

Jantz, Texas Knife Supply, Sheffield are all knife suppliers that sell blades and guards. Might be tough to find a carbon one from them though.

thanks for the posts,,,do you guys know if anyone out there makes blades from Files that are forsale?   I don't care too much about strength and needing to pry with it I just need it for maybe cutting patches and field dressing maybe skinning.

I thought the guard basically slides up the back of the handle part and you lock it in right before the main blade.   I do have a friend nearby who makes them (nathen where are you) who could make sure I bought the right stuff that would fit together,,, I just want a basic field knife and not a showpiece by any means.

thanks for the posts and I'll look up those suppliers.
