Forging Day 4
« on: January 20, 2011, 09:08:00 PM »
Today was my 4th attempt to forge a knife. I am pleased to say that i have a RR spike knife (not a pretty one) that will shave hair off my arm (if only in spots). Here she is!

I have learnt alot from this one...

This one is ALOT Smoother than the last one. I also did some cleanup before quenching that helped the end product. I have read alot about how rr knives aren't efficient. After quenching this one my double bastard file would barely take metal off the edge so I know it's hard enough. I was shocked I got it that sharp and that was with a belt sander.

things I learnt.
1. Adding more coal don't make a difference it just means your going to burn more coal. Coop helped with this revelation.

2.Machinist vises SUCK for smith work especially when screwed to a table that is not attached to something heavy. You then have to wrap your leg around the leg of the table and use both habds on the vise.

3. Take your time and actually listen to the advice given. Most of the time it helps.

4. Even though the blade profile may look like hell after forging. After shaping it on a belt sander it may turn out ok.

I wanna be at my forge right now but its me and my Girls one year and she's making me stay in. No complaints though we are going junk shopping tomorrow. Looking for a post vise and other usable scrap. gave the knife pictured above to my dad today. thats his 2nd. The first pointy knife is going to my cousin who got me the spikes and the track.
