Tis Merely A Flesh Wound

Well gang I got a good reminder of how dangerous bladesmithing can be today.  I was working on a blade the same way I always do. The next thing I know I feel a hit on my forehead and my hat goes flying.  The unsharpened blade hit me a glancing blow and left a Frankenstein scratch on my forehead.  

Anyone care to guess what I was doing when the blade became airborne?

A face shield would have prevented this injury.

I'm no bladesmith but my guess would be grinding. Glad your ok. Good reminder for everyone!

Either what frank said or you had it on your drill press, face shelds are cheeper then stitches

Glad you're okay Clay. That definitely can be dangerous. Dave McCroskey, who makes knives here in Oklahoma, has told me that he has had a number of times when a knife goes flying off his wheel and up into the rafters of his shop, and he occasionally never finds the blade. Sounds pretty scary to me.

After the whack in the head.  I checked on the scratch and went back out to work in the forge.  Tricia came home from shopping and walked past me several times before she noticed it.  She then gave me that look all wives have and told me to be more careful.  All while dragging me into the house to clean it up.

I vote buffing. Aw shucks...it will give you character!

This is what happens when you don't tape a sharpened blade and don't clamp it down when drilling a hole in the tang and your bit sticks.

Maybe someone should start a topic about shop safety, with only safety tips, and get it stuck at the top?

The buffing wheel would be my guess,I consider it the most dangerous tool in the shop.

I was forging the tang of a large knife to a different angle.  I didn't have the grip I thought I did on the blade end.  Then, Bam! Another scar on the bald head.

Clarence, I did the same thing with slightly different results. You really learn how many nerve endings are on your fingertips when something like this happens!

wow... I got a face shield at lowes for $14 because I nearly hit myself in the face with a red hot rr spike. This makes me even more glad I did. Glad it didn't hit anything more vital.

Hey, buddy-glad to see it wasn't more serious.  Knowing you, I'm a bit surpised you didn't throw a little saw dust or some other clotting agent on your head in the garage and just keep going  :) .  Glad you have your wife there to keep things going well.  In all seriousness, I know how big on safety you are-glad all is well.
