I made these along with my forge and figured I'd put it on here.  I looked at a LOT of forges and burner assemblies before deciding on this particular design.  They'e a mixture of several different styles that I saw and seem to work pretty well so far.

I was trying to stay away from complicated, as I'm not all that bright...  I got 6" black pipe nipples (longest I could find) and put on another little nipple just to make it a touch longer.  Put a reducer on the end and welded a small pipe nipple in the center of the large end of the reducer.  Capped one end of the small nipple and put a reducer on the other end.  BEFORE welding the smaller nipple on, I drilled a small hole in the center and welded a nut over the hole.  I got nuts that fit the .035 MIG tips I had and screwed those in.  Attached quick disconnects to the reducer and piped in the propane through a few valves so I could run 1 or both burners.

 


 


 


Was a little nervous at first, but the forge runs pretty darned well considering I'm the one who built it...

looks good. I've been thinking about a little forge all I need is to heat treat my blades. I don't forge anything.BUT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT PROPANE.

I like them.  They look alot like the Ron Reil burners.  Did you build flares for the ends? Are you satisfied with the heat they generate?    I'm in the process of deciding what style burners to put on the forge I'm building. I'm making it out of a 5 gallon air tank. There are so many decisions and I don't want to waste time or money.  Any advice would be appreciated.

By flares, do you mean on the end of the burner pipes?  If so, no I didn't.  I've seen them on some others and understand that they apparently make the burners more efficient?  If you did a design like this, I think you may be able to buy flares for the ends (Zoeller forge?).

I don't have a pyrometer, so I haven't found out what temps I'm getting to.  That being said, after running both burners for 15 or 20 minutes I put on some farrier's rasps to anneal.  In well under 5 minutes, they were both at non-magnetic.  After checking the 2nd one on my magnet, I noticed the 1st was getting that really slick, watery look on its surface.  Not sure what that means temp wise, but I was quick to turn the forge off at that point...

Good luck-lots of ideas out there and ways to make metal hot.

How did you make sure the MIG tip was centered while you welded the nipple to the reducer?

We welded the nut onto the nipple, then eye-balled it when we welded it all to the reducer (real scientific, I know...).  Even though we didn't use anything specific to make it "exact", it all seems to work just fine.  Hope that helps.
