15" Bowie (OLD YELLER)
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:54:00 PM »
This is 1/4" 5160 with a 10" blade OAL is 15" Brass finger guard and 1/2" spacer with osage handle. I got to thinking awhile back about the ABS test knife, and was wondering if i could build one that would pass the test, so after reading alot from the ABS web site i forged this one, and this is what i ended up with. A BIG Thank You to Lin, for all his information on what to do next. (I called alot)
This knife has been a bear to build, first handle split and had to replace it. I think it turned out ok, but let me know what you think.

I have cut the rope and chopped some wood with no chips or roles on the edge, it passed the brass rod test as well. the only thing left to do is  bend it. i dont know if i can, i have put about 60 hr. in this knife
Thanks for looking

Dana, that is most impressive brother!  You do great work for sure!

The only thing I would say is I like softer lines on the handle.

Thanks for sharing!

Dana, great looking knife and I can understand why you would not want to bend/break it. 60 hrs is a lot of time invested and if you are like me your knives become part of you by the time they are finished. Getting a chance tobtake that step towards ABS certification might make it worth the "pain" though.   :goldtooth:

Don't bend it! Ugly knives are for testing, that one is to pretty.

That's a true beauty right there.
Be tough to ruin that.
Now, having made one that passes SOME of the performance qualifications, why not take what you learned on this one and see if you can build another one?
Then, build it knowing up-front that you'll be destroying it.
Actually, why not make two exactly the same?
And if one passes, use the remaining one for the actual Performance Test?

Thanks guys,
Steve I see what you mean about the handle, it could use a little softer lines but it feels good.
Karl your right, my next knives will be a set of test knives, knowing that I'll break one, I had really planed to break this one, but after the h--- it gave me, I'll keep it. I really feel that it will pass the bend test. Pro's like you make us new guys think in different directions

With Lin's tutelage, you can't go wrong.

Yea, right

What Karl suggests is a pretty good idea. If you decide to make another, go ahead and write down your complete procedure while it's fresh on your mind, then make another. OR, even better, go ahead and test this one and you can tweak the next one if it's necessary.

What ever you decide, eventually you will have to do some testing that includes the bend test, not break test.     :nono:     One thing to notice in the bend/flex part of the test is that there is a range within the ability of the steel that are sort of the extremes that the steel will allow. In other words you can heat treat the blade to bend with very little flex ( remember there is a difference between bending and flexing )to 90 degrees, which will pass the test, or you can heat treat it to flex to 90 degrees and spring back nearly straight which will also pass. The second way is much better in the real world, but to be safe I would just lean to the first scenario. In the real world, the first scenarion might concievably bend and take set in a severe chopping setting, if you make a mis lick and hit a little to the side of the blade. That's not good.

So, from this I guess you may gather that my knives that are not test knives are heat treated a little stiff. I think it helps them cut better, but that's just me.

Dana,

You have created a great knife. The blade is very beautiful in its simplicity of shape and wonderful functionality. I think it would be the perfect large camp knife. Of course, I don't know exactly how it would perform, but I suppose that is what the tests are for, and it sounds like the knife will pass most of those, except you don't know about the bend test. I sure hate to have a knife like that destroyed in testing; however, you will never know what it is really like until you do. Making a knife that isn't as pretty to bend up is definitely a good option as opposed to ruining a knife as nice as this one. Best to you in your quest toward receiving your JS.

Guys, if I build two more, how far would you finsh it, this one is 600 grit, I really want someone to look at it and tell me what I need to work on before I build another one, any of the JS or MS. I'll mail it to you, let me know

Very nice Dana, it is tough to bend one after putting all that work into them but it is a great feeling to know you done every thing right...

If I were building one strictly to bend/destroy I wouldn't worry about going past a very good 400 grit. Just make durn sure all your grit lines are running lengthwise.

You might just want to forge full tang, not worrying about the wooden handle. At the Moran School we just rapped paper towels around and taped for handles.(if your going to cut things before bending).
Also will need laylard hole (for safety)
Also make pipe to put over it before bending I can send pics if you need.

Dana,
If you are going to actually take the JS test, it has to be a full tang handle. For the MS test, it has to be a hidden tang. There is no stipulation as to the degree of finish, but I believe a smooth finish contributes to the blades toughness.
For any informal testing you can do what you want of course.
