Built my Press!

Finally got this thing done... it's a 2" thick wall square tube welded (not by me) to a 2" thick steel plate.  The die block just slides up and down that tube.  Pretty dang simple with minimal foot print.  5HP motor, 11 GPM pump, Ram - 3000 PSI, 8" stroke, 5" bore

Supposed to be 24.5 Tons with that configuration.

So far it is running great.. but I haven't loaded it heavy yet.

Very excited.

hhhmmmm... anybody use Picassa to post pictures here?  I started using so I don't have to re-size every time I post.  Works great for everywhere but here it looks like?  

I guess it's an html thing...

Please advise because I don't want to have to upload to two different programs!

Karl.. I've been using Photobucket.  But I don't like taking the time to re-size.  Picassa does it automatically specifically for forum posting... and it is also free.

But I have it figured now....

Really nice Scott - I am planning to make dies for one of the two presses I have at the shop.  Both are metal munchers for ironworking and do not have the length of stroke as yours but I think I can get it to work.  Should be real handy for welding.

about 2 years ago I told photobucket to resize everthing for me. that was the first and last time I had to do it.
I am not sure what a press is for but that looks like a real nice one. I know that if it helps you make them sweet knives I can't wait to see it's efforts. good job.

Clay... That question is hard.  It was a pain that's for sure.  Technically it's not that hard if you have a welder and good equipment for cutting and drilling thick steel. One of the harder things for me was just getting all the parts together.

Another issue is making sure the person who welds is good at keeping the steel where it's supposed to be as it cools off.  I had a couple alignment issues that came up because of that....

You say pattern weld, do you mean that cool damascus stuff? Get the steel nice and hot and squish it in that press and weld it together?

Yeah damascus... I spend too much time on the Fogg forum. Pattern welding is more acceptable there.

I'm gonna be squishing all sorts of things now. Steel, beer cans, chipmunks...

I don't advise you pattern weld a Chippy for hunting. I heard they squeak when in your sheath and they might give away your hiding spot.   :biglaugh:
