Joey Buchanan (joebuck) Designed Skinner
« on: May 27, 2011, 12:26:00 PM »
Ever since I sat in on Joey's Turkey Talk session two years ago at the PBS Banquet, I've been mesmerized by the man.  He is very funny and a very innovative bowhunter especially with the bearded and feathered species.  Actually that paints a pretty funny picture right there  :)

Thanks to Joey, I now dress up in rags and have a Martha Stewart flora wreath in front of me every spring

This year I requested one of his handmade turkey calls in exchange for making him a skinning knife of his design.  Normally I shy away from such requests especially after I saw what he wanted me to forge!  The knife appeared too big...but I tend to like knives that are maybe too small.  He assured me that one day he skinned 6-7 deer with his brother's knife.

So I received my turkey call with a wooded knife to try to copy.  The rest is history.  In fact once I finished it, I informed Joey he wasn't going to get it for awhile cause it was going to get some mojo.  I liked it so much that I slapped a para-cord handle on so I can take it to bear camp in two weeks.

Joey, I promise you'll have it all cleaned up with nice scales by Elk season unless one of the bear hunters decides it should go home with them   ;)  tippit

Knife is 8 1/2 inches oal from a 5160 car spring.  That's the only steel I had to be able to get a nearly 2 inch deep blade.

This is pure misery now!!...oh gosh, i now have a finished picture....I told Doc "just keep it as long as you like"  well i am a liar..i need the knife now!!....but How do you turn down FREE Traditional MOJO.....you dont!....ya'll skin some bears with that rascal!....most important part of that knife is that little circle stamp before the blade.....it means it was Handmade by one of the classiest and humble bowhunters on this site.

DS  ...Thanks for the kind words on the Wooden Hen....we both have been dodging some tornados lately....my wife has told me to get my own bathtub next tornado...i am filling up the tub by myself.

Joey, have you thought about getting a hot tub? You and your wife could both get in it, and it's good for more than hiding from tornadoes, too...

The knife looks perfect for sizing.  I make a very similar design.

It sure looks good to me, Jeff!! And I know it will look even better with the handle slabs. Your knives are lusted after, and rightfully so. Joey can wait for the finished product.    ;)  That 5160 makes a great knife when done right, and I know you did it just the way it needs to be done.

On another note, thanks for your incredible generosity on the St. Jude knives. That one auction offering, where you have donated 3 knives and have everyone in an understandable frenzy, is going to be one of the highlights of the entire auction. A fella needs to construct a spreadsheet to keep up with the complex bidding that is taking place to get a timeshare in those knives. Good on you, brother.      :notworthy:
