Skullworks Custom Knives INFO!!!!!
« on: July 04, 2011, 11:50:00 AM »
It has come to my attention that I haven't made this clear to everyone...

C Smitherman Custom Knives was started 2 years ago.
I make custom knives from pre-made blanks in damascus steel, 1095, 5160, 52100 carbon steels. On occasion I will do knives from ATS-34 & 440C stainless steel.
Handle materials I use range from standard woods to exotics like mammoth tooth and mammoth ivory. I prefer to use stabilized woods. Stabilized wood is impregnated with acrylic resin to make it virtually impervious to liquids of any kind.
I assemble my knives using the highest quality materials and workmanship. I use West Systems Marine epoxy for assembly which is completely water proof as well as having a high sheer strength.
The sheath for my knives are also handmade and tooled by myself. They are made of 6-9 oz vegetable tanned leather.

If anyone is unsatisfied with their knives please contact me. Thanks!

Hi Clarence,

As I noted in my pm to you, absolutely no worries here.  Look forward to receiving my knives and I appreciate the info about them.

I too, am building mine from purchased blanks at this time and obviously find nothing wrong with that, as long as this is made clear up front.

Mine are no where near the level of craftsmanship of yours, maybe someday.  I have gained so much insight and knowledge from the members of this forum in such a short time, it's absolutely amazing.
cheers, Dale

Clarence, I don't feel you have tried to mislead anyone. I've seen it stated many times in your posts that you are using pre-made blanks. The problem is that you do such a good job with the handles, pins and sheaths. Your knives all look custom built!!

Well said! except I dont make my sheaths....ditto on everything else!!!!but its in the family.for myself didnt even think anyone was misleading....think all that is getting old already. And in another part of the forum didnt a couple of us talk about methods of stabilizing wood and what woods didnt need that process or take to that process.
Like everything else!!! The more you do the better ya git. LOL Ive only been playin with these knives for a couple years. Most of them I have given away..Given alot more away than I have got money for......I dont intend on giving anymore away though..I am knife broke.
And like anything else for me there is lots of room for improvement....I felt rocks were being thrown at me about misleading also. Didnt even think of being that    AND NEVER THOUGHT THAT OF YOU! We do business with the same folks...Bottom line is let people put hrs and hrs into even a blank blade knife,,and give it a proper finish. Then make that sheath and go through the steps it takes make it exquisite.
Let alone shape a blade and then heat treat it. Heck shape the blade and send it to a temepering outfit...Who has thousands of dollars worth of equipment and it comes back superior and perfect. Then the knives we assemble are cutters and users.... Heck there are thousands of excellent knife makers.  Camilllus made the knives for about every major knife company out there BUT they put their names  on it and Queen made knives also for about everyone. and they put their names on it. Not Camillus or Queen.
Mostly we make beautiful handles, pins maybe tool work on blades and have the best in metals. And are proud of what we do..
