Question for ND mule deer hunters
« on: January 30, 2008, 03:39:00 PM »
Looks like my partner may not may be able to make it on our western elk hunt this year so I'm considering a solo mule deer hunt in Dorth Dakota.  Have hunted ducks in the state, but never deer.  Will I be able to find public land  to chase mulies around should I be able to draw an any deer license?  Have my own camping gear and probably two weeks in September to spend at it.  Appreciate any info you can provide.

Orion, get your National Grasslands map, it will show you all the public land. North Dakota has their "Any Deer" bow tags listing on the site(Game and Fish site) with instructionS on applying. You should be able to get a tag, they only draw if the apps outnumber the licenses. License numbers were increased this year. There are lots of mulies in the badlands. Where were you lookin to go?

I live in Dickinson, just 30 miles east of the badlands on I-94.  I spend most of my hunting time out there.  Normally we like to keep wester North Dakota a secret and are more than happy to see all of the hunters driving through on their ways to and from MT, but to a fellow tradganger I'd say that there are a few million acres of federal land and you won't have any trouble finding nice places to camp and hunt.
I don't know much about the non resident licensing proceedures, but I believe Joel's note above is correct.
If you decide to come, drop me a line, maybe we can meet up for a cold one or something.

Joel:  I'll get a copy of the Grasslands map.  Have no idea where I would go.  Just wanted to make sure there were public areas to hunt before I applied.  I'll start doing my homework.  I do know that every time my wife and I drive to Montana (my daughter moved there a few years ago) I always comment to her as we pass through a part of the National Grasslands that it looks like a place that would hold mule deer. Hadn't checked it out on a map to see how big it was though.

Brad, thanks for the words of encouragement.  I think North Dakota piqued my intestes as a destination because I read a positive article about mule deer hunting there a few years ago.  As I remember, it said there weren't the numbers of deer that one might find in say Colorado, Wyoming or Montana, for example, but not as many hunters either. And, I'm looking to get away from the crowds as much as anything else.  The last three states I elk hunted, Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming, were pretty much overrun with hunters on the public lands I picked.  Partially my fault.  I didn't go to areas that limited ATV access, but there's just a lot more folks out there than there used to be.  There may be fewer hunters overall, but more of them are going west.

Thanks for the info.  I'll definitely look into this further.  I notice that North Dakota also has a few antelope.  I remember seeing a few in passing through the state, but can't remember where, probably east of the badlands.  Would either of you mind if I asked a few more questions via a PM?  Thanks again.

shoot with the pms, I can give you some pointers on areas, as can Brad I am sure. I did live on the edge of the Nat'l Grasslands for a few years and spent alot of time chasing in the hills.
