My first folder so far.

Stock removal from an old sawmill blade. Clay backed and etched. File work on the tang and on the whitetail antler crown.

Learned alot from this project, most important lesson is pick the antler, then design the blade, that will save a headache or two!

And I made the tang too long! It was fun!

Been considering a sheath design while I find some rawhide!

That is pretty slick!

I've tried to do something similar in the past and had a little difficulty keeping the cut for the slot in the antler straight.

Would you mind sharing how you cut yours?

John, I must confess cutting the slot where I pinned the blade and the slot on either side for the blade and the tang was difficult! The antler pictured was my second try!

I used a straight edge and eyeballed it for the most part. I made two cuts with my band saw then used a variety of files. A good tip would be either completly finish the blade then fit the slot, or make the slot slightly smaller to allow for blade finish. Then I used a Dremmel tool with a burr and fit check fit and check!

JD, This antler was still attached to the skull and I sawed it off close to the skull plate and rounded the bone off to the length I wanted. Then I free handed the pattern I wanted with a pencil. Then I used the Dremmel to rough in the design and used a fine needle file to clean it up. Finally I used a finger nail buffing board with the three or four fine grits to polish!

Guys, I have a question, do you like the color that I dyed the antler? Or would it look better natural, darker or lighter? I used Fibings Leather dye.

Lin, I woke up this morning to find it is a shead antler now!!!!!
