W2 With Raised Clip
« on: May 05, 2013, 08:42:00 PM »
I was asked to make a knife that will be a gift to an Air Force Soldier. A price was agreed on however the design neede a little tweaking to make it a knife I wanted to make. A sketch was made and sent for aproval. So I began my first full tang knife. I dropped it off with Chuck Ward Friday for him to shoot. I think Chuck did a great job and I wanted to share it here.

Comments and critiques welcomed.

That's really nice Chris. I like your treatment of the front of the scales, very cool and unique.

Wow - nicely done.
Doesn't get much better than that.

Very nice work all the way around. Its hard to hide any problems on a simple design. Which makes it not so simple after all.    :)   Anyone would be happy to carry that knife.

I know you are a big proponent of testing your work. Can you give us an idea of the things you put it through before you were satisfied?

Thanks for the kind comments fellas. Ben, the shaping on the front of the scales was designed as retention in the Kydex it will be wearing. I would hate it if the knife wasnt where it was supposed to be when there is a need for it.

Lin, I am big on testing because I want to pull every little bit of potential out of the steel. I started testing this one on a pine 2"x2". I shaved chopped and cut. It handled these tasks well so I found a knot it the 2"x2" and chopped it repeatedly.  Again it showed no damage and still shaved. Next I did some crunching cuts through 3/8" sisal rope. At over 200 cuts it would still cut hair. All this without touching up the edge again.

I really enjoyed making this one. Forging it was a bit trickier than I first thought. I like to see the knife in the forged product. This one required more shaping on the grinder than I usually do.

I like the tapered tang. Nice touch. The Airman should be very proud and honored to carry this beauty.

Very nice! The tapered tang really sets off the knife, and the retention ridge looks good as well as being functional. Good design.
