Charcoal forge Idea
« on: June 23, 2013, 11:50:00 PM »
Awhile back I decided I wanted to get into metal forming.  I would say knife making but I will get to that later in life!  Well I need a forge.  I decided to build a forge and I plan on using charcoal.

About 2 months ago I found a water hear placed on the side of the road.  My initial plan was to make a stove for my shed.  Then after some research on charcoal forges I realized that the liner was perfect for a forge.

After some cutting today I have what looks to be a good start of my forge.  I cut the top off the liner and turned it up side down.

I also want it to be double duty as a stove of sorts for my shed.  My shed is about 12x12 so the heat output should be fine for the area but I need a way to get rid of the fumes from the fire.  So I plan on placing the cut off top of the heater on top with an access door cut into it.  What I am unsure of is if I place it over the fire so its in closed, will this affect the fire for forging process? Here is a pic of the top portion.

I also plan on using this outside when weather is nice so do I make it removable or weld it in place?  I hope my description is good enough so that you can envision what I want to do.
