16 inch Belt Axe
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:54:00 AM »
I carved the haft from a kiln dried 5/4 Hickory plank yesterday. About 16 inches over all. The head is wrought iron with welded steel bit, 3 1/8 cutting edge and 5 1/2 long. Bites real good.

That's a perfect pack axe, right there, Lin.
I like that.
And I understand your admiration of a decent axe.
I really like that size.
What did you use for the bit?

When the last elk vanishes from the hills,
When the last buffalo falls on the plains,
I will hunt mice for I am a hunter and I must have my freedom.

Great looking Axe Lin.
The axe you sent out here has had plenty of work and is "broke in" now. The haft is on it's third coat of rubbed in linseed oil and I've only had to touch up the edge once.
It's getting that "feel" and makes me smile when I use it.

I start following the kitty's tomorrow and it has a job for most of the winter. A lucky someone is gonna love the feel of that one.

Thanks guys.

Robin, I just wish I could follow you on one of those hunts. I hope the axe serves you well.

Karl, it's 5160 drawn slightly softer than a knife.

Perfect!  That'll do a man proud...and his kids and grandkids, most likely!
