Been a spell

since I've done anything I wanted to post up here. I check in and try keeping up on what you guys are building. Been playing and messing around on the ranch but figured I had better be getting back to work. Here are a couple I finished the last few days.

First is a small little folder just 1 3/4" closed length and less than a 1/4" thick. Last year a buddy asked if I could build him a little Lockback in all Damascus. Had it on the bench messing with it for a few months and finally finished it. I think it turned out kinda cool, not liking the screws but they worked OK for now.
     

Next is a 4 7/8" Damacsus Hunter with a stainless guard and nice piece of walnut I picked out of the scrap pile down at the Sharps Rifle Factory in town and had stabilized. I need to stop in there a little more often...

Doug, that's a very nice piece of "scrap". Back when I was working as a systems engineer in St Louis, MO, one of our customers was in Arkansas. Rather than fly down, I would drive and stop by Rheinhart Fajen Gunstocks on the way back. They threw the scraps from $500 stock blanks in the bed of a pickup parked in back for firewood. I would always come home with a shopping bag full of "scraps". Got zebrawood, fancy maple and walnut, a very small quantity of ebony - it was always fun going through the pieces later and picking out the really spectacular ones.

I think that's what the new owner has in mind for the folder Lin. I need to do some thinking on those screws. I carried it in my pocket a few days after finishing and sure noticed it. Thinking flathead screws but the frame pieces are only .055" thick. Thought peened pins might be my best bet but it would be pretty hard to finish the Damascus after peening.... Any of you brainiacs have suggestions?

I'm really liking those knives, Doug. That folder is especially nice. I'm no brainiac and far from experienced with nice folders, but for the screws, here's what I'd try...

I used 2-56 flat head screws for the back spacers on some (failed) liner locks that I was going to put the scales over to hide. The Ti I was using was .050 and I had the corresponding 82 degree countersink. Unfortunately, I needed the 1/4" one, not the 1/8" that I'd ordered. For your back screws (not the pivot), I'm wondering if you could countersink just a fuzz into the back spacer? If you had a few of the screws in so everything was held in place correctly, then carefully countersink, I believe you'd still be able to have part of the flat head holding your metal scale securely.

As for the pivot...I think it would be a little tougher. But, there are so many pivots out there that I think you could find some fairly low profile ones that either have or you could grind the edges down so it wasn't so proud of the scale. If you counterbored just a little bit into the scale, it'd still hold well (I think...) while bringing the thickness at the pivot down a bit.

I hope that makes some kind of sense.

On another note, I might finally get to meet you-I'm heading to the Seattle show with Bing. I'm really looking forward to getting to see so many great knives and makers. Matter of fact, I'll bet he might have some good ideas for your folder screws.
