Brute de Forge and Wooden Sheath
« on: October 01, 2015, 11:21:00 AM »
Good day, all.  Thought I'd post a few pictures of a recent brute de forge I recently finished up.  I've been working on forging as close to finished shape as possible lately, which isn't as easy as y'all make it look! I really appreciate Lin's in-progress photos he posts as he's forging.  That has really helped, although you couldn't tell it by looking!  I only touched up the cutting edge radius and the butt of the tang on this one to tweak the profile.  I've got a long ways to go and would appreciate any helpful insights.  That said, here's the specs:

- 1080 steel forged from 1" x 0.187" bar stock
- 6 5/8" oal
- 2 1/2" blade
- 1/8" at the ricasso with distal taper towards the tip and tang
- Recessed rosewood scales with hammered copper washers and brass pins
- Laminated rosewood and padauk wooden sheath with drain hole, shock cord keeper, and copper stud
- Vertical/horizontal combo belt plate, allowing the blade to be carried in any 90 degree orientation

I like it. I also like the photos because they show things like edge thickness and geometry, which is nice BTW. Great job.

That is cool. I like how you did the scales but left them far enough back to appreciate the finger guard and forged finish. Nice work all the way around.

Very cool package. The design looks very useful and I like that size. I've got nothing for you on the forging...I struggle with that. I rust don't do enough of it, often enough to get pretty good at forging really close to shape. I generally get it in the ballpark and go grinding from there  :) . But with those brut knives, being able to control those hammer blows and having a well thought out end produce, coupled with the process gets pretty important. Congrats on a great knife and sheath. I think you should post more knives  ;) .

Curt, I like the complete package!  Very nice job and thoughtful work. Really handy sized knife and sleek sheath too.

The sheath work is an interesting process as you experienced.
