My son got this block for me at the Blade show.It is very hard and appears to be stabilized. Does any one know what this might be?

He actually got me two of these from a box at the Jantz supply table. I cut one in half for scales and the reddish brown color goes all the way through

Looks like dyed curly maple to me, but I've been known to be wrong before, just ask my wife!
