Wanted: wood scales for Swiss Army Knife
« on: November 08, 2016, 06:52:00 PM »
I have carried one of these for 50+ years; I'd really like to buy some wood scales - nothing fancy needed - that are close in thickness ( don't have a belt sander ), or possibly have someone put it all together.
Anyone interested? PM or email.

Thank you!

I think if you profile the scales to close-to-size, they will be such a small piece of wood, you can easily cut them down to thickness with some coarse sandpaper on a sanding block, or a fresh, new file.

You can pick up some super fancy scales that are 1/4" thickness and it would really take very little work to thin them down.

Bladepeek, that's what I'm thinking; I'm hoping to find a source for scales that'll be close in thickness.

Do you know what wood you want? Some of the knife supply businesses will have wood for knife scales and give the measurements. Another place I've bought from (though it was in person) is Gilmer Woods in Portland, OR. They have a ton of different woods and take pictures of the individual pieces, so what you choose online is exactly what you'll get. I don't really buy scales, just blocks, but you might check with them. Do you have any specialty wood supply places near you? Woodcraft is a decent place to take a look, too. And yes, some files/sandpaper would get you down to the thickness you want pretty easily.

Cool idea-I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Good suggestion there, thank you. I'll take a look. Don't need any exotic wood, maple would be fine, bocote, ironwood...

Ironwood is some of my favorite wood, but it's really hard stuff. I've not bought from this place, but it may be an option for you.

That'll do it! Thin enough for me to finish, and I don't need a pile of it.
Thank you gudspeir.
