Big ole 3V choppers
« on: November 12, 2016, 10:13:00 PM »
Its been a while since I've posted some of my fun in the shop.

These were to be used brushing in blinds and be both tough as nails and as light weight as possible for their size.  While not as pretty as some of my others, these were fun to work on and will be pretty good hard use tools for the field.

12" overall length, 7" cutting edge, 1/4" thick CPM 3V steel, flat ground with heavily skeletonized tang, black micarta handles have a heavily bead blasted finish, ~11oz without sheath and ~14oz with a kydex sheath.  The flats are tumbled and the grinds with a belt finish.  I did a batch of 4 of these along with a few one offs for some friends.

I'd say they work well enough.  This one is for me with a fairly rough finish on the flats.  I may clean it up some one day  Here it is working on some duck blinds in prep for the great migration here through Arkansas...

This one is for a buddy of mine prior to getting my logo etched.  I gave his a little higher grind than I did on mine...

Thanks for the kind words. I've been enjoying mine this season so I made a small batch of them. I'm looking forward to hearing how other users are using and enjoying them in the field on their many adventures. I kind of prefer doing smaller skinning/hunting knives typically but these were a neat project.

That would be a great bushwacking knife, not many trees where I am from so a big knife is as good as an axe for a lot of stuff.

I dig the thickness of the blade, I bet that thing can take some abuse.

Thanks for the compliments. Being 1/4" thick 3V it should be about as bomb proof as a guy could hope for. 3V can really take a lot of abuse and this was build pretty heavy duty by design.

Now that's a tool......well done!!
In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's there are few...So the most difficult thing is always to keep your beginner's mind...This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner.  Shunryu Suzuki

Thanks.  That's quite the compliments coming from a knifemaker as accomplished as you!  I must say your knives/builds are one that I kind of follow and am frequently inspired by.  I'm particularly impressed by your x-rhea bowies and the beauty and creativity you display with all the various fittings on your knives.  I hope to one day be able to play with one of your fantastic skeleton Bowie knives.

I really like working with some of the crucible steels for many of my designs due to the improved toughness and corrosion resistance that they can offer but I can't help but love the look of hand forged knives and hardware.  I've tried learning to forge from a few local guys just so I can play with various fittings and artistic hardwares like you seem to create so regularly.  Unfortunately going from the hot air around a forge to cold air elsewhere seems to induce an asthma attack for me, just like when I get out of a warm building in winter time or a hot shower to cold and dry air.    :banghead:
