Belly splinter on BBO!
« on: August 19, 2008, 10:08:00 PM »
I had a crack running between growth rings and wasn't sure how to deal with it. The limbs were bending pretty good and I strung it low to get a better look at where I was. The string somehow slipped and it was basicly strung backwards!
The crack was pretty close to the surface of the belly by now and it found it's way to the top after the string slipped. Best repair? Silk and CA or will CA alone do it? Never had this happen before.

Can you post a pic of your crack. Does it run with the limb or across?    Pat

Belly cracks need to be strengthened in compression.  It is difficult to do unless you do a patch a la Dean Torges'.  Go to  www.bowyersedge.com  and look at his Articles.  There is one called "Patching Bow Limbs".
Take a kid hunting!

If it is a longitudinal belly crack in osage, sometimes you can just ignore it.  I have several BBO bows with longwise belly cracks that shoot just fine.  Dan

Pat, I'll post a pic tomorrow.

John, I was thinking there was an article by Dean on patching limbs. Thanks for the link.

Dan, I thought I could ignore this one and probable could have had it not got itself strung backwards. Still not sure how that happened but this bow has been acting like it wants to torque or something while stringing.

Sorry, I haven't been able to get that picture up yet.
I was thinking that I had read about Dean Torges using CA and silk to mend a lifted splinter before. It may have been as a survival technique while hunting elk and not the best when you have other means available but I don't remember for sure. If anybody can tell me where this article is please let me know.
John, I read the one "Patching Bow Limbs" but I wonder if there is a way to fix a crack that is (I hate to say it), easier.

I found the article about using silk to fix a splinter but he talks about a splinter on the bamboo of a backed bow.
Nothing is said specificly about fixing a belly splinter.
I'm wondering if I shouldn't work past the splinter since it is close to the surface. I guess I've been preoccupied with getting it to come out at a certain wt. and should be thinking more of its durability.

I use thin ca glue to fill belly cracks all the time. I make a lot of cherry bows and the stuff has gum pockets which are really a separation between the growth rings. Oily woods like osage probably need to be degreased with acetone a couple of times before you fill the crack.  make sure you have high quality ca glue, regular 'super glues' just aren't as strong

Well, I can't get a picture up. The picture is in the internal memory of my camera and I can't get it to go to the memory card.
Anyway, I tried to see if I could work beyond the crack but it ran too deep. So I dished the crack out and now I have to get a piece of osage slat to fit down into it and glue it in with Urac.

mystic,
Kodak. I tried, but I'm pretty much technically challenged. My daughter said she tried too. She normally can do the thinks with this stuff that I can't.
I will keep a photo journal to show y'all how it works out. The card is in the camera now.  ;)

I would open the crack a tiny bit and put super glue in and clamp it, let it rest for a day and get back to tillering. Keep watch and if the crack begins to open back up, re-glue and wrap at the top and bottom of the crack.   Pat

I agree with Pat.  That is a rather unusual crack in that it does not seem to be related to either the rings or the grain.  You can try the thin super glue;  it might work.

I'm guessing that the osage was from a board. The way it splinters makes me believe the side grain was violated. On backed bows that normally doesn't effect anything but by it reversing it caused the splinter to lift.
You may find that most of the crack will be eliminated by the time your tillering is complete. Keep checking it and adding super glue where needed as you reduce the wood.   Pat
