bubbles under snake skin
« on: December 06, 2008, 06:18:00 PM »
I just found a couple of bubbles under the skins on my bow. The thing is I have 2 coats of tru oil on it now. I was putting the second coat on when I saw them.
Question:
Do you think I can still cut a slit in them and shoot some super glue underneath to fix them?

You can always re-do the finish>>>

A lot of people wrap a snake skin with an ace bandage once they glue it on. I never have as I prefer to continually work glue from the center of the skin to the edges with my thumbs.

I will usually spend about 1/2 hour on each limb, centering the pattern and pushing any pockets of glue and air bubbles off the sides of the skin. The glue has set up enough after I finish squeegeeing it with my thumbs to not need to be wrapped.

A little more info.

It always surprises me how much glue I can push out from under the skin with my thumbs so I go over the skin rolling my thumbs from the center of the skin to the outside at least a dozen times.

Eric, I thought about not wrapping the limbs this time but did anyway. Next time I will try it your way. I spent alot of time lining them up and pushing out air bubbles but didn't quite get them all.

Bill, the finish wasn't effected by gluing down the bubble. It was only one real bubble. I think the other foreign bump was maybe some excess glue. Which is another reason to like Erics method.

Thanks for your input guys.

Use a syringe with TB II or III - you may have to thin it a bit - and inject a small amount into the bubble. This will glue it and give the air an escape route.
