Newbie Questions
« on: January 04, 2009, 09:44:00 PM »
Guys, I am about to dive into this laminated bow building thing head first.  I have a longbow reflex/deflex design I have come up with.  I have another longbow of less reflex/deflex design that I like but is not a real good performer for the draw weight required to pull it.

By increasing the amount of reflex in the bow I would like to be able to decrease limb lamination thicknesses and reduce draw weight but keep the same or close to the same desired speed.  At least I hope.  The bow currently pulls 63# @ 28" and is 66" long

My bow now utilizes these lams in this order:

.050 glass

.120 core wood (tapered .002)

.032 uni weft

.120 core wood (tapered .002)

.120 core wood (tapered .002)

.050 glass

1)   Can you tell me about how much weight I would loose by substituting .0110 core woods for the .0120 core woods that are in it now?  (That would decrease the thickness of the limbs about .030 because the bow utilizes 3 of these lams)

2)   Also would I decrease weight faster by decreasing the glass thickness instead of the core wood thickness?

3)  I am inducing about 2 inches of reflex into the limbs over the current design.  I know there are no steadfast answers but do you guys have any guess as to how much draw weight this would put in any given long bow of a "pronounced" reflex/deflex design.

Thanks for your help guys.  If any of you bow builders out there want to take a stab at this of give add any guesses at these questions please feel free.  Thanks in advance.

Mike

Well, addin that in my head,I come up with .492. That is really thick for 63# even with .006 taper unless your limbs are very narrow. So, my wild guesses(not gospel by any means)

1- around 10#

2- glass is stiffer and heavier than wood,so yes

3-between 5 and 10 #s

.006 is a lot of taper, does the current bow stack towards the end of the draw?

Binghams chart shows a strait longbow at 68" having .427 butt thickness with .002 taper for 65#.

Please don't take this as criticizm, just thinkin out loud! LOL
Stay sharp, Kenny.
