glass lam question
« on: February 25, 2009, 11:30:00 PM »
Hey guys..
I just got all my lam materials cut and I am a bit worried about the thickness.
Here is what I got going:
16" riser and 2 - 26" limbs (Take down recurve)
I am shooting for 35# at 27" draw.  oh..2" limbs
The thickness just above wedge is .230" .  The part I am worried about is the tip area.. it is .140".
Binghams has the #'s per the thick area.. but no mention of the tip thickness.

So any help guys!
Thanks,
Brad

If your are following Bingham's recipe for the lams for a recurve (i.e. 1 parallel and 1 tapered (at .002 per in) then you should be good.  Just take the wedge out and measure the butt thickness then compare that to Bingham's table.  Since the recurves usually do not use the entire 36 inch lam, you can adjust that butt thickness (increasing it only) slightly by sliding the tapered lam to achieve the desired thickness (and then chopping off the unneeded butt end prior to glue up).

The tip thickness should just be a function of  (butt thickness - (lam length x .002).

It should work just fine. Best of luck

Yeah,
When I used my lam grinder that I built, It thinned the tips out a little more than the .002.
That is why I am asking.  I have seen so many variations of limbs at different thickness's, so was hoping someone might know what the tip @ .140 might do.
